Base Points
Every correct answer starts with a flat base. This is the floor — you always get at least this much for a right answer. Everything else stacks on top.
Think of base points as the guaranteed reward for knowledge. Whether you answer in one second or use the full timer, the base stays the same. This ensures that even cautious players who take their time are always building their score.
Speed Bonus
Answer quickly and you earn bonus points on top of the base. There are tiers — very fast answers earn more than moderately fast ones, and slow answers get no speed bonus at all. The speed bonus is also scaled by difficulty, so answering a hard question fast is worth more than answering an easy one fast. Using Swap or Split disables the speed bonus for that question, since you've already spent time.
The tiers work like this: answering within the first few seconds earns the maximum speed bonus, the middle range earns a partial bonus, and answering in the final seconds earns nothing extra. On hard questions, the speed bonus can nearly double the points you earn from a single answer.
Difficulty Multiplier
The difficulty of the question directly multiplies your points. Easy questions earn the base rate, Medium earns more, and Hard earns the most. This is why surviving into the later stages of a run matters — the harder questions are where the real points live.
The gap between Easy and Hard is significant. A Hard question is worth several times more than an Easy one before any other bonuses are applied. This means the back half of a long run, where hard questions dominate, accounts for the majority of a top score.
Streak Multiplier
Consecutive correct answers build your streak, and your streak applies a multiplier to your points. The longer the streak, the bigger the multiplier. This is the single biggest scoring factor in the game — a long streak on hard questions with speed bonuses can produce enormous totals. One wrong answer resets it to zero.
A streak of five correct answers might double your points. A streak of ten could triple them. The multiplier keeps growing with no cap, which is why the top leaderboard scores come from players who maintained a streak for 20+ questions without breaking it.
Clutch Bonus
When you're down to your last heart, you earn a Clutch multiplier on every correct answer. It stacks with everything else. Playing well under pressure is literally rewarded.
The Clutch bonus is designed as a comeback mechanic. If you've lost hearts but kept a long streak, the Clutch multiplier stacking on top of your streak multiplier can produce some of the highest single-question scores possible. It rewards courage under pressure.
Special Mode Scoring
Several special modes modify how scoring works. Gauntlet and Clutch Comeback bank points with escalating multipliers. Hot Potato applies a time-based amplifier to your net score. All or Nothing is a straight wager on a single question. Each mode page explains its own scoring twist.
Understanding mode scoring is critical for leaderboard runs. Gauntlet offers the highest potential multiplier of any mode if you complete the full ladder. All or Nothing can double your recent gains in one question. Speed Match multiplies the speed bonus itself. Knowing when to accept or decline a mode offer based on your current score and streak is a key skill.
How They Stack
All multipliers compound. A correct hard question answered fast on a long streak with Clutch active is worth dramatically more than a slow easy answer with no streak. The score breakdown after each question shows exactly which bonuses contributed.
Here's a concrete example: a hard question answered fast on a 15-question streak with Clutch active might earn 800+ points. The same question answered slowly with no streak and full hearts might earn 80. That's a 10x difference from the same question, purely from multipliers. After each answer, the score breakdown shows exactly how much each factor contributed.
Optimizing Your Score
The most important takeaway is that streaks dominate everything. If you have to choose between answering fast and answering correctly, always choose correctly. A broken streak costs far more than a missed speed bonus. For detailed, Quizzel-specific strategies for climbing the leaderboard, check out the score optimization guide.
